Domaine Ramonet Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Boudriotte 2014 (1.5L)

$27499

Clos de la Boudriotte is the 1er Cru that grandfather Pierre Ramonet built his reputation on for red wine, and the family still treats it as their flagship Pinot. The site sits at the southern end of Chassagne, where heavier soils give a darker, more structured red than you'd expect from the village. This is the magnum of the 2014 vintage, a dozen years from harvest, which puts it in a sweet spot: the savagery of youth has faded, the secondary notes - dried cherry, mushroom, sweet earth - are emerging, and the large format will keep it pacing slowly for years yet. Old-vines from a low-yield estate, aged in roughly a third new oak.

"As was the case when I originally reviewed the '14 Boudriotte, there is still a mild touch of reduction that isn't sufficient to mask the otherwise mature, ripe and cool aromas of rosemary resin, apple, pear and citrus peel. There is fine volume to the delicious and generously proportioned flavors that manage to retain solid delineation on the focused and lingering finale. This is not an especially elegant effort (though Boudriotte rarely is) but I do like the balance."

"Very pale, bright yellow. Rather wild scents of lemon, lime, white flowers and crushed rock. Fat, savory and sweet, with captivating salty minerality enlivening the chewy flavors of white peach, citrus zest and smoky oak. Wonderfully tactile yet smooth wine with superb subtle length and salinity. Shows more dimension than the 2015 version. No shortage of sweetness here but has lovely supporting acidity." —Stephen Tanzer

More about Domaine Ramonet

There are dozens of excellent producers in Chassagne-Montrachet, but Domaine Ramonet is widely considered to be the best. That is quite remarkable given that the domaine is only three generations old (a spring chicken in Burgundy).

A young Pierre Ramonet first began buying small parcels of land in Chassagne in the late 1920s, when there were deals to be had. Today his grandsons Jean-Claude and Noel have been at the helm for over 30 years. They are expert farmers and winemakers and have the talent and experience needed to make magical Chardonnay.
