Domaine Roulot Meursault 1er Cru Clos de Boucheres 2023 (1.5L) [NET]

$1,79999

Roulot's monopole — a walled clos of 1.38 hectares inside the larger Bouchères premier cru, which no one else can bottle. It came to Jean-Marc Roulot only in 2011, a late addition to a domaine whose reputation was already built on a chiseled, mineral idea of Meursault rather than the buttery one. Roulot left an acting career in Paris to take over in 1989 and has spent the decades since arguing for restraint: organic farming, gentle pressing, indigenous-yeast fermentation, new oak held to a modest share, and a hard cap of six bâtonnages, because stirring the lees builds richness at the cost of purity. The whites spend roughly a year on lees in barrel, then a further six months in stainless steel before bottling. 2023 was Burgundy's warmest season on record but with a relatively cool summer; a mid-July hailstorm passed through Meursault's top premier crus, Bouchères included, before warm, dry weather brought the crop back, and the whites came in with fine balance between fruit, acidity and alcohol. This is the magnum, which is the format to buy if you intend to wait.

"From a 1.37 ha parcel. Elegant, cool and restrained aromas of pear essence, jasmine tea, hazelnut and a hint of petrol are trimmed in pretty floral wisps. There is fine mid-palate density to the middle super-sleek and lilting weight flavors that possess a beguiling texture while the impressively long and complex finale is supported by firm lemon-tinged acidity. This is outstanding and classic Bouchères, e.g., a wine of finesse."

"The 2023 Meursault Clos des Bouchères 1er Cru has an intense nose with touches of fennel infusing the citrus fruit, hints of crushed stone and slate. Very focused, with just a slight reduction. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, very intense and focused, sapid with a strict, tightly coiled finish that should mean it ages well in bottle. Excellent." —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Meursault 1er Cru Clos des Bouchères is lovely, offering up aromas of nutmeg, orange zest, white flowers, freshly baked bread and struck match, followed by a medium to full-bodied, satiny and racy palate that's pure, electric and saline." —William Kelley

"Roulot's 2023 Clos des Bouchères is impossibly seductive, boasting a ripe pear fruit aroma with a floral note and hints of coconut water, flinty minerality, and smoky reduction. Winemaker Paul Delorme notes that the Clos des Bouchères is a stony vineyard, similar to Perrières. The texture is powerful, concentrated, and yet elegant with its saline edge. According to Delorme, the trick is to put the lees into suspension with a quick stirring before malolactic and then leave it alone since Roulot wants to bottle when the wine is slightly reductive."

More about Domaine Roulot

The name Roulot is now a synonym for the very best wine that the village of Meursault can offer. It is rather remarkable when you consider that just 2 generations back the Roulot's were known as producers of Burgundian brandy and eau de vie. But Guy Roulot began leveraging the family's distilling success to purchase small plots of vines in Meursault and by the 1970's was known as a pioneer for producing top quality chardonnay from distinct parcels or ""lieu-dits"".

When Guy passed away unexpectedly in the early '80's his son Jean-Marc was pursuing acting in Paris. In 1989 he returned to take on the reigns of the small Domaine and in the following decades built on his father's success so well that the wines are now extremely hard to acquire and to afford for most of us.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Turbot in beurre blanc, roast Bresse chicken, lobster with drawn butter, veal in cream sauce, or a well-aged Comté.

Tasting Profile

Lemon, white peach and hazelnut over a stony, saline core. Medium-bodied and taut rather than rich, with racy acidity, restrained oak and a long mineral finish. Young, and built to reward cellaring.
