Domaine Trapet Pere et Fils Grand Cru Latricieres-Chambertin 2020

$49999

Dive into the cool, stony heart of Burgundy with this refined Pinot Noir from the southern edge of Chambertin. Biodynamically farmed and vinified with gentle extraction, the 2020 reveals dark preserved fruits, dried peony, damp earth, and graphite minerality. Soft maceration with indigenous yeasts and 18 months of aging in 30% new oak creates a wine of remarkable precision and complexity. The Trapet family has tended these vines since 1904, capturing the essence of a terroir cooled by winds from the Hautes-Côtes.

"Here too there is a mentholated top note to the aromas of green tea, cool red berries, the sauvage and a plethora of floral elements. There isn't as much volume or density, but the middle weight flavors are racier, more refined and notably more chiseled while the lingering and very firm finish exudes minerality; indeed the finish seems built on it."

"The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru, which was picked around 7 September, has a vibrant nose with a mixture of red and black fruit, crushed stone (basalt?) and faint liquorice scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, cohesive and with great depth. There is just a touch of oak to be subsumed on the finish, so give this 4-6 years in bottle." —Vinous

"The 2020 Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru is striking, unfurling in the glass with aromas of dark berries, exotic spices, sweet soil tones, orange rind, smoked duck and peonies. Full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's concentrated and multidimensional, with a lively spine of acidity, superb depth at the core, and a long, perfumed finish." —Robert Parker

"A stunning wine, with black cherry fruit aromas of incredible concentration. There is a lovely sweetness to the fruit and a beguiling suggestion of roses on the nose. Masterful, with the power to age for decades. The Trapet family has owned a large chunk of Latricières since 1904. Grapes ripen late here since it sits in the Combe Grisard, bathed in the cool winds from the Hautes-Côtes. However, the alluvial soil ripens fruit well."

More about Domaine Trapet Pere et Fils

Domaine Trapet is not exactly a new name in Burgundy. They've been growing grapes in Gevrey-Chambertin since the 1800s, and have amazing parcels in all the best vineyards, up to and including Le Chambertin. Back in the day, they sold their best grapes to the likes of Domaine Drouhin and Maison Leroy.

But since the 1960s, they've been bottling their own wines. The style has fluctuated a bit, as styles have varied with the generations. Today the domaine is run by Jean-Louis Trapet, whose style can best be summarized as a laser-like focus on making delicious Pinot Noir.

Here are the technicalities of that: light extraction (a touch of bâtonnage or punching down at the beginning of fermentation, but just remontage—pumping over—after that), very little new oak, and whole-cluster when the grapes are ideally healthy (which is quite often, as the farming is biodynamic).

This sounds like what many of Burgundy's best are doing today. But in one area Trapet departs: while "reductive" winemaking is all the rage (limiting the wine's exposure to oxygen), Trapet likes to make his wines open and accessible from release, including by using as little sulfur as possible in the process. That's how he makes his Pinot Noir so delicious!
