Domaine Vincent Dureuil-Janthial Bourgogne Coteaux Bourguignons Rouge 2023

$3299

Coteaux Bourguignons is Burgundy's most humble red appellation — the catchall tier — but in the hands of Vincent Dureuil-Janthial, that humility is the whole point. The Dureuil family has farmed Rully for centuries, and not much has changed since the 1500s: certified organic, hand-harvested, planted and picked by the lunar calendar. The same precise winemaking that earns him a reputation as one of Burgundy's most respected mentors gets applied to this entry-tier Pinot Noir from younger or declassified vines. Classically Burgundian, and that elusive thing: a real value.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"The 2023 Côteaux Bourguignons, which is 90% Pinot Noir and 10% Gamay, has a light red cherry and red plum nose, though it needs a little more definition. The palate is soft on the entry, but there's more structure on the mid-palate and it's a little savory toward the finish. Fine." —Neal Martin

More about Domaine Vincent Dureuil-Janthial

Dureuil-Janthial is a star producer in the Côte Chalonnaise, a region of Burgundy that is often underappreciated. Just south of the Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise has the same soil composition as its more celebrated northern neighbor. However, mechanized farming and a more industrial approach to winemaking marked the region for much of recent history. Vincent-Dureuil-Janthial became an exception to that rule almost instantly when he took over his family’s winery in 1994 at the young age of 24. He went against the grain by converting his vineyards to organic farming and by eschewing the machines and instead opting for hand harvesting.

His hard work paid off and now he is known as an exceptional winemaker around the world for both his reds and his whites. Such a double-threat is a rarity in Burgundy. Jean-François Coche once gave them the ultimate endorsement when he said that if he spots Dureuil-Janthial on a wine list, he always buys their wine.
