Domaine William Fevre Chablis 1er Cru Montee de Tonnerre 2023

$10299

Montee de Tonnerre is widely considered the greatest 1er Cru in Chablis, the cru closest in spirit (and in proximity) to the Grand Crus on the right bank of the Serein. Domaine William Fevre, founded in 1959, holds some of the most enviable parcels in the appellation and farms them with characteristic precision. The 2023 was raised gently, with gravity-fed vinification, fermented in stainless, and aged 19 months total with about a third briefly in older French oak for texture. The result captures the sunny generosity of the vintage with classic Chablis tension: beeswax, pear, orange peel, fennel, and a long, salty, oyster-shell finish.

"From a 2.24 ha holding that is divided between Pied d'Aloup, Côte de Bréchain and Chapelot. There is reasonably good typicity present on the more floral aromas of poached pear, lemon zest and shellfish-scented nose. There is again fine volume and mid-palate density to the delicious and vibrant medium-bodied flavors that terminate in a dry but not really austere finale. This surprisingly powerful effort could use better depth so at least a few years of cellaring should be beneficial."

"The 2023 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru is a step up from the slightly underwhelming 2022 last year. Fine delineation, citrus-fresh with petrichor and a touch of peach skin. The palate is well balanced, and quite powerful though well focused. A keen line of acidity with more sapidity on the finish compared to the Vaillons. Persistent spiciness on the aftertaste. Recommended." —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre unites a solar personality of the year with tension, delivering aromas of beeswax, pear, orange peel and fennel, mingling with oyster liquor. Medium- to full-bodied, the palate is tangy and textural, with considerable depth and a long, saline finish." —Kristaps Karklins

"This powerful, thrilling wine shows pronounced, ripe aromas of mirabelle plum, nectarine and green apple, with a strong underpinning of flinty minerality and smoky reduction. The texture is tightly wound and compact; it's substantial, but not heavy, carrying the wine to a marvellously long finish. The grapes are from 2.24ha in the lieux-dits Pied d'Aloup, Côte de Bréchain (planted 1936), and Chapelot, fermented in a combination of tank and cask, ageing now on the lees prior to bottling. Ideally wait five years before opening and drink over the next 30."
