Egly-Ouriet Champagne 1er Cru Brut Les Vignes de Vrigny NV

$11799

Egly-Ouriet is one of the most revered grower-producers in Champagne, known for their uncompromising commitment to quality and their masterful handling of old-vine fruit. Based in Ambonnay, Francis Egly also farms a prized parcel of Pinot Meunier in the neighboring 1er Cru village of Vrigny, where this cuvée originates. Unlike many Meunier-driven Champagnes that emphasize fruitiness, Les Vignes de Vrigny is serious and structured, showcasing the grape’s full potential when treated with the same meticulous care as Grand Cru Pinot Noir. Fermented with native yeasts and aged for an extended period on the lees, it offers remarkable depth and vinous complexity.

On the nose, this Champagne is rich with aromas of baked apple, citrus oil, and toasted almonds, underscored by a deep mineral core. The palate is broad and layered, unfolding with notes of ripe pear, spice, and a touch of smokiness, all framed by Egly-Ouriet’s signature chalky intensity. Unlike lighter expressions of Meunier, this wine has structure and persistence, with a taut acidity that keeps it fresh despite its depth.

Its richness and texture make it a fantastic pairing for roasted poultry, wild mushroom risotto, or aged cheeses like Comté. Les Vignes de Vrigny proves that Pinot Meunier, when given the attention it deserves, can stand alongside the great Champagnes of the region.

Antonio Galloni

"The NV Brut Les Vignes de Vrigny 1er Cru is gorgeous in the way it balances the natural depth of Meunier with real energy and vibrancy. Dried pear, spice and crushed flowers all open in the glass, but what impresses me about this release of Egly's pure Meunier is its translucence and finesse. The Vignes de Vrigny is so expressive and gorgeous in this release." —Vinous

"The latest rendition of Egly's NV Brut Premier Cru Les Vignes de Vrigny was disgorged in July 2019 with two grams per liter dosage after 36 months on the lees. Offering up a lovely bouquet of golden orchard fruit, dried white flowers, rock salt and a subtle touch of praline, it's medium to full-bodied, elegantly fleshy and incisive, with a deep core of racy but mature fruit, a pinpoint mousse and a penetrating finish. From a parcel of 50-year-old vines in Vrigny inherited by Francis Egly's wife, this is a beautifully elegant wine that makes for a fine introduction to the house style."

"Smoked almond and toasted brioche notes are a rich overtone in this mouthwatering Champagne, with a finely detailed bead accented by hints of dried white cherry, candied lemon zest and thyme that linger on the finish."

More about

Francis Egly’s stunning wines have become this scarce for a reason. For four generations the Egly family has farmed their old-vine Grand Cru vineyards in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. When Francis took over the family estate in the 1980s, Champagne was still deep in its industrial farming era. He chose a different path: organic farming, replanting with massal selections, restricting yields, harvesting ripe fruit and fermenting and aging in oak barrels. The wines spend years sur lattes, in most cases at least 48 months with some far longer, and are bottled with just a touch of dosage. The result is Champagne with remarkable power and depth, beautifully concentrated fruit and incredibly textural detail.

Back in the day, Egly’s approach was nothing short of radical. Along with other iconic growers of his generation like Anselme Selosse and Olivier Collin (Ulysse Colin), Francis was instrumental in transforming our understanding of what Champagne could be and in carving a path for the grower Champagne movement itself.

And critics place Egly-Ouriet at the very highest levels. William Kelley calls Francis “the most precise and meticulous winemaker in Champagne,” while Antonio Galloni places the domaine “at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today.” Kristaps Karklins of The Wine Advocate writes that “this 20-hectare domaine continues to refine and improve, producing wines of intensity and power without the weight… these wines number among the best in Montagne de Reims, particularly the exceptional Blanc de Noirs Les Crayères and the Millésime.”
