El Coto Mayor Rioja Reserva 1981

A Rioja Reserva that has been quietly turning into something else for more than forty years. El Coto de Rioja was founded in 1970 in Oyon, in Rioja Alavesa, so a 1981 Reserva comes from the bodega's first decade — made the traditional way, with high-acid Tempranillo given long, patient aging in American oak barrels before bottling, then decades of rest in cool cellars. That combination is exactly why classic Rioja survives this well: the oak aging softens tannin early, the acidity holds the wine upright, and the fruit slowly gives way to the savory, leathery, tobacco-scented register that mature Rioja is loved for. This bottle came to us from a private collection rather than from the bodega. Stand it upright for a day or two, then decant gently off the sediment and drink it over the following hour or so — at this age it is at the table now, not later.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast lamb shoulder, milk-fed suckling pig, or braised oxtail. Simpler still: a plate of jamon iberico and aged Manchego, which is how they would drink it in Rioja.

Tasting Profile

Dried cherry and fig alongside leather, tobacco leaf, dried herbs and old wood. Light to medium in body, with tannins fully resolved into silk and the bright acidity that keeps a wine this old alive. Long, savory, gently earthy finish.
