Etienne Becheras (Le Prieure d'Arras) Crozes-Hermitage Rouge 2024

$2999

Old-vine Syrah from the steep hillsides of the Northern Rhone, made by a grower who farms organically across a small 12-hectare polyculture estate near Arras. Etienne Becheras works plots in Arras, Vion, and Mercurol, and this Crozes-Hermitage comes off old vines on a steep slope, bottled unfined and unfiltered. It is a serious, honest take on the appellation without the price tag of its famous Hermitage neighbor. The 2024 drinks well young but will reward a few years. Decant if you open one soon.

More about Etienne Becheras

This producer actually straddles the two districts, as they have vines in the village of Vion, one of St. Joseph’s original six villages but not one that you hear about much. But most of their vines are just north of there in the village of Arras, so it’s in this section of the list. They have some interesting terroir on steep, rocky terraced sites, some of which bear limestone soils (which are not at all common in St. Joseph). This is a top-quality producer making classical St. Joseph.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Rosenthal Wine Merchant

This is, as Hemingway said about the best of writing, a “true” wine. There can be no wine more expressive of this appellation and of the Syrah of the northern Rhone than this splendid bottle of joy. A wine of sublime concentration that gives definition to the term “goût de sèvre”, this is satisfying, pure and flat-out delicious. It bristles with fresh acidity at the outset, then with aeration settles in to display classic northern Rhone meaty fruit. Becheras is a truly worthy successor to the great Michel Ferraton—a domaine we represented in its prime—his cave only missing the scrawled poetry that graced the walls of Ferraton’s cellar!
