Field Recordings About Time Organic Merlot 2023

$2199

Field Recordings is Andrew Jones's Paso Robles project — by day he's a vine-nursery fieldman who walks every corner of the Central Coast, and on the side he turns small lots from overlooked vineyards into wines that always overdeliver. About Time is the organic-certified value tier, and the Merlot makes a strong case that the grape deserves a comeback. From a single estate vineyard, fermented in open-top tanks, aged briefly in stainless and neutral oak to keep the fruit fresh. Plum sauce, blue fruits, hoisin, and tobacco leaf — Jones calls it "a daily-drinking claret for your dining table," which is exactly right.

Antonio Galloni

"Crushed wild blueberries and nuances of plum combine with chalk dust and sage as the 2023 Merlot About Time comes to life in the glass. This is soothingly round, with soft textures contrasted by mineral-infused red and blue fruits over a stream of lively acidity. It leaves a staining wash of wild berry concentration and delicate tannins while tapering off classically dry, with lovely length. Don't overthink it, this varietal Merlot excels for its drinkability and savory edginess." —Eric Guido

More about Field Recordings

Like Bob Dylan’s music – covering folk music, the blues, rock and gospel – or Salvadore Dali’s paintings – from realism to surrealism – Andrew Jones of Field Recordings has range. He does single varietal, single vineyard wines that are extremely varietally correct, and he has blends that encompass more grapes than the average person can rattle off the top of their head.

Andrew always has his eyes peeled, keeping an eagle-eyed lookout for vineyards with untapped potential. As a day-to-day nursery fieldman planning and planting vineyards for farmers up and down California, he sometimes gets a small plot of fruit to work with. Since the grapes can range from Pinot Noir, to Riesling, to Xarel-lo, it takes raw experience and an affinity for vines to be able to continuously make great wine from these sites at unpretentious price points.
