Folias De Baco Uivo Renegado 2024

$2399

Tiago Sampaio is one of the most interesting voices in the Douro right now, making natural wines under the Uivo label (uivo means "howl" — a nod to the wolves that still roam the high vineyards). Folias de Baco is his project, built around old field-blend parcels at 500-700 meters, where schist and granite soils and the altitude conspire to keep things fresh in a region usually known for size. Renegado is the entry: a co-fermented field blend of roughly two dozen varieties — half red, half white, hand-harvested and macerated whole-cluster for three days — that lands somewhere between a light red and a deep rosé. Crunchy, lifted, dangerously gulpable.

Robert Parker

"The 2024 Uivo Renegado Vinhas Velhas comes from an 80+-year-old field blend of more than 30 different grape varieties, red and white (palhete), trying to replicate the wines produced by the local growers in the past. It fermented with full clusters and had three to four days of maceration in concrete and was kept in stainless steel for six months. It has a pale and bright ruby color and a showy, perfumed, lively and expressive nose in the style of some reds from Jura. It has moderate ripeness and alcohol, 11.55%, a pH of 3.39 and 5.2 grams of acidity, with a medium-bodied palate and unnoticeable tannins. It's easy to drink, balanced and lively, with character. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2025." —Luis Gutiérrez

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Bowler Wine

A field blend of more than 25 varieties (about 50/50 whites to reds), including Rufete, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Franca, Mourisco, Tinta Roriz, Gouveio, Rabigato, Donzelinho Branco, Malvasia Fina and Viosinho, among others. The vineyard is located in Cima Corgo at 650m elevation in granite and schist soils. Hand harvested, macerated for 3 days, and foot stomped in mostly cement tanks with 5% in barrel.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled sardines, charcuterie boards, mushroom pizza, roast chicken, or chilled gazpacho. A picnic wine through and through.

Tasting Profile

Light-bodied and bright. Pomegranate, raspberry, watermelon rind, a stony freshness. Juicy acidity, barely-there tannins, refreshing finish.
