The beer that started Fort Point, and still the one that outsells everything else they make: KSA — as in Kölsch Style Ale — takes the classic pale, top-fermented ale of Cologne and builds it with a West Coast accent. German Munich and Vienna malts do the grain work, giving it more depth than the style usually gets, while American Warrior and Saphir hops keep the finish clean and bracing rather than bitter. At 4.6% ABV and 17 IBU it's built for the second and third can, not just the first. Fort Point brews it in San Francisco, down the street from the 1853 fort the brewery takes its name from — a building that has survived two wars and five major earthquakes. Brothers Justin and Tyler Catalana started the place after cutting their teeth at Mill Valley Beerworks, and it has since grown into the city's largest independent craft brewery. Call it a modern San Francisco classic: an old-school style, brightly updated.
