Fumey-Chatelain Arbois Chardonnay Les Capucins 2022

This is single-vineyard Jura Chardonnay from a strain most Chardonnay lovers have never met: Melon à Queue Rouge, an old red-stemmed Chardonnay selection. It grows in the lieu-dit Les Capucins in Montigny-lès-Arsures, a south-facing site the family calls "graviers gras" (rich gravel) laid over a bedrock of Lias marl. That's unusual ground in a village mostly known for marl and for Trousseau. Marin Fumey is a cousin of Stéphane Tissot and one of the names to know in the Jura's new generation. He farms organically and ferments with native yeasts in old barrels. His parents started the domaine in 1986 with barely half a hectare and sold their grapes. Now it covers 17 hectares across about twenty sites. If the domaine's straight Arbois Chardonnay is the introduction, this is the deeper look at one exceptional site and one old strain of the grape.

More about

Domaine Fumey-Chatelain is a family-run estate producing wines for several decades. They’re located in the heart of the Jura, with land that abuts Domaine de Pelican (an estate which has gained fame for two reasons: the first being that it was previously owned by Jacques Puffeney, godfather of the Jura; the second being that it is currently owned by Burgundy's Marquis d’Angerville).

Marin Fumey is the current winemaker (his father tends the vines and his mother takes care of sales), and though his roots are firmly planted in the Jura, he’s traveled extensively as a wandering wine professional, with stints in Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand. All of this globetrotting has exposed Marin to new philosophies, practices and languages (he’s the rare Jurassien winemaker who is fluent in English); his goal now is to amplify his family’s efforts and make world class wine.

Where his father made just a handful of wines, Marin has expanded the Fumey-Chatelain range quite extensively, allowing him to put forth a variety of terroir expressions.

Aged Comté or Beaufort; poulet de Bresse with morels and cream; river trout with brown butter and almonds; roast chicken with tarragon; mushroom risotto.

Tasting Profile

Expect the fresher, mineral side of Jura Chardonnay: lemon, green apple and white flowers, with a stony, savoury edge from the gravel and marl. Old barrels and long lees ageing typically add a rounder, gently creamy texture without obvious oak, while bright acidity carries a dry, saline finish. Think of a taut, chiselled white Burgundy.
