Georg Breuer Riesling Trocken Rudesheim Berg Roseneck 2017

$10199

Georg Breuer is one of the Rheingau's iconic estates, now run by Theresa Breuer (taking over after her father Bernhard's untimely passing in 2004) with a quiet brilliance that has only sharpened the house style. Berg Roseneck is one of Rüdesheim's three legendary steep-slope Grand Cru sites, sharing the ridge with Berg Schlossberg and Berg Rottland. The 2017 vintage is a classic — concentrated but cut with bracing acidity — and now beautifully open, layered, and singing in the glass. A profound dry Riesling at full maturity, and a benchmark of what the Rheingau can do.

"The 2017 Riesling Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck is always a late release; the 2017 is the current vintage. It is bottled the year following the harvest but only sold with bottle age. The 2013 vintage was the first to be held back for late release. There are no rules, the 2018 came out in 2022. This year sees the release of 2017. The nose is imbued with a hint of petrol that soon verges into lemon-pervaded beeswax and dried lemon peel. The lemon lift almost has a sinus-clearing vividness; later, wet and dry hay notes complete the picture. The palate brings the same unfrilly honesty: there is something naked and bright about the clean-cut palate with edges of earthy yeast and subtle beeswax. Its texture, however, is strait-laced, clean-cut, concentrated and incisive with vivid stony-earthy depth. It is alluring in a self-possessed, self-evident way with yeasty richness and lemony length." —Anne Krebiehl, MW

"The 2017 Berg Roseneck opens with a rich and matured bouquet reminiscent of prestige Champagnes due to the intense sur lie aromas that appear, although the wine wasn't aged longer on the lees than any of the other crus (until July 2018). On the palate, this is a textural as well as savory Riesling with a remarkably stable and firm acidity structure and a creamy but also saline and finely tannic finish. This is a superb dry Riesling. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023." —Stephan Reinhardt

"This is almost creamy in mouthfeel, which is complemented by notes of ripe yellow plum, peach and singed lemon peel, creating a luscious experience. It shows balance, making it both indulgent and food-friendly. It has developed very nicely with age."

More about Georg Breuer

George Breuer is wo-manned by the delightful Theresa Breuer, who took over for her father at 20 and has helped to center the spotlight back on her home region of Rheingau. This storied hillside, whose wines, at one point, graced every royal table in Europe, had been on a slow decline for decades. Thanks to the work of those like Theresa, Eva Fricke and Josie Leitz, their fortunes are deservedly back on the rise.

What sets these apart from the rest of the pack are their dry, mineral-imbued, late-release Rieslings aged in barrels. The estates is run by a team with an ambitious sense of perfection, a vineyard manager dedicated to sustainable farming methods with a Fair n’ Green® certification, and winemakers crafting cellar-worthy wines with as little intervention as possible -- "controlled idleness".

Theresa's only makes wine from Rheingau's best vineyard, crafted traditionally: fermented naturally and aged in large, old German oak Hösch barrels. Each one carries a sturdy and firm structure, but never feel heavy, and are far more mineral than fruity; these are classics with a solid backbone. The GB wines have become some of the culty-est in the enviable Skurnik German portfolio.
