Georg Breuer Riesling Trocken Rudesheim Berg Roseneck 2019

$11999

Starting in 2013, the estate decided to hold the Roseneck wines back until they felt they were "ready." Since then they haven't been released in a particular order or with the same maturation regimen, but all are astoundingly delicious.

The vineyard is higher up on the hill, facing south but protected from wind, guaranteeing easy ripening. Even so, from the excellent, warm 2019 vintage, this is totally dry with only 11.5% alcohol. It's more floral and a little more elegant—probably with the extra time in barrel and bottle—the other top cuvées.

"The 2019 Riesling Rüdesheimer Berg Roseneck is the current release from this quartzite site. It spent one year in large barrel and 60 months in bottle before release. Smoky stone on the nose leads to a bone-dry palate. Despite its age, this needs more time as its future creaminess is developing. This will be gorgeous. (Bone-dry). 95pts" — Anne Krebiehl, MW, Vinous

More about Georg Breuer

George Breuer is wo-manned by the delightful Theresa Breuer, who took over for her father at 20 and has helped to center the spotlight back on her home region of Rheingau. This storied hillside, whose wines, at one point, graced every royal table in Europe, had been on a slow decline for decades. Thanks to the work of those like Theresa, Eva Fricke and Josie Leitz, their fortunes are deservedly back on the rise.

What sets these apart from the rest of the pack are their dry, mineral-imbued, late-release Rieslings aged in barrels. The estates is run by a team with an ambitious sense of perfection, a vineyard manager dedicated to sustainable farming methods with a Fair n’ Green® certification, and winemakers crafting cellar-worthy wines with as little intervention as possible -- "controlled idleness".

Theresa's only makes wine from Rheingau's best vineyard, crafted traditionally: fermented naturally and aged in large, old German oak Hösch barrels. Each one carries a sturdy and firm structure, but never feel heavy, and are far more mineral than fruity; these are classics with a solid backbone. The GB wines have become some of the culty-est in the enviable Skurnik German portfolio.
