Georg Breuer Riesling Trocken Terra Montosa 2023

$7399

A "baby Grand Cru" wine blending their five Grand Cru vineyards in Schlossberg, Rottland, and Lorch, and aged slightly less than the top wines. The name means "steep earth" and references a document from 1074 describing the incredibly severe slopes of the the Rüdesheim vineyards. This is a dry, waxy, steely, lemony wine with subtle fruit that overdelivers every vintage.

Perfect with seafood, raw dishes, or alpine cheeses, this is a wine to drink now for its precision or age for complexity. One of Germany's smartest buys for serious dry Riesling lovers.

"The 2023 Riesling Terra Montosa is made from all the steep sites of the estate: Rüdesheimer Berg Rottland, Berg Roseneck, Berg Schlossberg, Rauenthaler Nonnenberg and Lorcher Pfaffenwies. It is blended after all the single-site wines have been decided on. The 2023 opens with a beautifully serene tone of peppermint tea, followed by pure, ripe, lifted Amalfi lemon peel. The palate has a touch of creaminess from oak that sits well with the generous fruit, swirling and swishing on the streamlined palate. All is present: fine freshness, plush fruit, proper contour and much elan. This is a rather seductive wine for all the Riesling skeptics out there. (Bone-dry). 94pts" — Anne Krebiehl MW, Vinous

"Bottled in July, the 2023 Terra Montosa is clear and slightly crunchy/slatey on the intense and elegant, finely iodine-inflected and pretty complex nose. Silky, refined and balanced on the palate, this is an intense and substantial yet delicate and balanced Riesling from Rüdesheim Mountain. The wine reveals intense fruit with crunchy minerals and fine phenol grip on the finish. 12% stated alcohol. Diam 10 cork. Tasted in August 2024." —Stephan Reinhardt

More about Georg Breuer

George Breuer is wo-manned by the delightful Theresa Breuer, who took over for her father at 20 and has helped to center the spotlight back on her home region of Rheingau. This storied hillside, whose wines, at one point, graced every royal table in Europe, had been on a slow decline for decades. Thanks to the work of those like Theresa, Eva Fricke and Josie Leitz, their fortunes are deservedly back on the rise.

What sets these apart from the rest of the pack are their dry, mineral-imbued, late-release Rieslings aged in barrels. The estates is run by a team with an ambitious sense of perfection, a vineyard manager dedicated to sustainable farming methods with a Fair n’ Green® certification, and winemakers crafting cellar-worthy wines with as little intervention as possible -- "controlled idleness".

Theresa's only makes wine from Rheingau's best vineyard, crafted traditionally: fermented naturally and aged in large, old German oak Hösch barrels. Each one carries a sturdy and firm structure, but never feel heavy, and are far more mineral than fruity; these are classics with a solid backbone. The GB wines have become some of the culty-est in the enviable Skurnik German portfolio.
