Giuseppe Mascarello Barolo Monprivato 2012 (1.5L)

A 2012 Monprivato in magnum, and the fact that it exists at all is the family's own verdict on the year. The Mascarellos give this cru its own numbered label only in vintages they judge outstanding or excellent, and in lesser years the fruit goes into the regular Barolo or is sold as Langhe Nebbiolo. Monprivato is a mid-slope hillside of just over six hectares at 280 metres in Castiglione Falletto, right in the centre of the Barolo zone. It faces south-west with nothing nearby to block the sun, and its Nebbiolo, much of it the Michét strain Maurizio Mascarello first brought in back in 1921, grows in blue-grey marine marl that's high in active limestone. It has been on the land registry as a vineyard since 1666, and the family has owned it since 1904. Today they hold nearly all of it, apart from a small parcel low on the hill that belongs to Giovanni Sordo. The cellar is just as old-school as the site. Mauro Mascarello, who took over in 1967 and now runs the estate with his daughter Elena, works in a converted 18th-century building in Monchiero that was originally used to store and sell natural ice. If you want Barolo made the old way from one of its most storied hillsides, it doesn't get much more authentic. Serve at about 18°C, which is the producer's own advice.

More about

Visiting Cantina Giuseppe Mascarello & Figli is in some ways a bit like traveling back in time: the winery is full of ancient, enormous botti, and though the largest casks are no longer in use, the family traditions still reign. Fermentations are slow, in concrete and steel; aging is long, in large oak botti ranging from 20 to 70 years of age. There are no tricks to doll the wines up. Farming decisions are made with an eye not only to the current vintage, but to future generations of Mascarellos.

However visiting Mascarello isn't just stepping into the past: a visit is being welcomed into a space where you can feel the profound connection between the present and what has come before, the thread that ties today’s Piedmont to its rich and wonderful history.

Elena and her brother, Giuseppe, are the latest Mascarellos to carry the thread forward, and they're doing it beautifully, which shows in the wines. The family has some of Piedmont's greatest terroirs, including Monprivato (often called “the Musigny of Barolo”). They do what they need to do to allow those terroirs to shine year after year, in each new vintage’s unique voice.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Brasato al Barolo, roast pheasant or jugged hare, tajarin with shaved white truffle, or a wedge of aged Castelmagno.

Tasting Profile

Expect the classic traditional Barolo profile: red cherry and dried flowers, with tar, earth and, as it ages, truffle and autumn-leaf notes. Ageing in large old Slavonian oak casks typically keeps the fruit pure rather than oaky. Firm, fine tannins and bright acidity give it structure, and the finish is long, savoury and built to age.
