Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate-Le Coste 1994 [NET]

Until the 2010 vintage, Giuseppe Rinaldi blended Brunate with Le Coste in a single bottling, a house tradition that ended only because labeling rules changed, not because anyone at the estate thought the blend was the lesser wine. This is that wine, from 1994, with three decades in bottle to become what mature traditional Barolo becomes: less about fruit, more about dried flowers, tar and forest floor. It was not an easy growing year in the Langhe, which makes a bottle like this a fair argument for the estate's farming and for patience generally. Old Nebbiolo can be fragile, so stand the bottle upright well ahead of time, open it gently, and decant off the sediment. Then drink it the same night.

Antonio Galloni

88 points

"Modestly saturated but fresh medium red. Slightly high toned aromas of plum, cherry, spice, marzipan, coffee and tobacco. A bit narrower than the '95, but sweet and vinous, with truffle and licorice flavors. Good extract and texture. Finishes with slightly dry tannins. Serve this Barolo with meat." —Stephen Tanzer

More about Giuseppe Rinaldi

A true legend in the commune of Barolo, Beppe Rinaldi was the last of the “Last of the Mohicans” – the others were Bartolo Mascarello and Teobaldo Cappellano – who resisted modern trends. Sadly, he died in 2018 at a still young 69, and the estate is now run by his daughters Marta and Carlotta (the winemaker and farmer, respectively), who are extremely worthy successors. Like Bartolo Mascarello, Beppe believed in the magic of blending different sites, but EU labeling laws forced him to make some compromises. They now release a Brunate, which is 85% Brunate and the rest Le Coste, and a “Tre Tine”, which is a blend of their remaining grapes from Le Coste, plus San Lorenzo and Ravera. They also have a range of wines from lesser grapes that are excellent but rarely seen in the United States because they are not imported via regular channels.
