A Napa Zinfandel built like a mountain claret rather than a jammy fruit bomb — the fruit comes off north-facing terraces between 900 and 2,000 feet in Chiles Valley, high and cool enough that the grapes keep their acidity. Green & Red takes its name from the ground itself: red chert soils veined with green serpentine, over Sobrante gravelly loam. Jay Heminway founded the estate here in 1969, and the vineyards are farmed organically. Chiles Canyon is the cross-section bottling, drawing on all the estate blocks, so it shows the house style in one glass — hand-sorted and destemmed into open-top fermenters, three days of cold soak, a roughly ten-day fermentation, then sixteen months in equal parts American and French oak with only a fifth of the barrels new. 2023 was California's long, cool, late-ripening season, which suits this altitude; the wine came in at 14.9% with plenty of lift. Tobin Heminway runs the place now with winemaker Aaron Whitlatch. Drink it over the next decade, with a half hour in a decanter.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Perfect Pairings

Grilled lamb chops with rosemary, a pepper-crusted ribeye, or barbecued pork ribs with a vinegary sauce. It also handles mushroom pizza and aged jack cheese.

Tasting Profile

Blackberry and red plum with black pepper, bay laurel and a brushy, piney edge from the mountain. Medium to full bodied, with brisk acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins. The oak reads as sweet spice rather than vanilla. Finishes dry and savory.
