Green & Red Vineyard Napa Valley Zinfandel Heminway Estate Reserve 2019

Green & Red's top Zinfandel, and a tiny one: 125 cases, drawn from three estate vineyards stacked up the mountain — the 1972 vines at Chiles Mill between 900 and 1,200 feet, Catacula planted through the 1990s at 1,200 to 1,400, and Tip Top, the highest, at 1,700 to 2,000. It is named for Jay Heminway, who founded the estate in 1969 and farmed these red chert and green serpentine soils until his death in 2019; his daughter Tobin makes it now with winemaker Aaron Whitlatch. The fruit is destemmed onto a shaker table and hand-sorted, cold-soaked three days, fermented about ten days, then aged in a mix of American and French oak, 20% new. 2019 was a generous but balanced Napa season, and the wine finished at 14.9% without tasting hot. There is enough structure here for another eight to ten years; decant it if you open one now.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Rack of lamb, dry-aged steak with a peppercorn crust, or wild boar ragù over pappardelle. Sharp aged cheddar works too.

Tasting Profile

Concentrated black cherry, blackberry and plum with bay laurel, pine and sweet baking spice. Full-bodied but firmly structured, with real acidity and grippy, fine-grained tannins. Oak shows as cedar and spice. Long, warm, savory finish.
