Elena Fucci reawakened Vulture; Grifalco is part of the wave pushing it further. The Piccin family made their name in Montepulciano before pulling up stakes in 2004 and relocating to this volcanic corner of Basilicata, drawn by a terroir nobody was paying much attention to. Brothers Andrea and Lorenzo now run the estate, and when Andrea visited our shop he put their philosophy plainly: "Things that can make great Barolo and Burgundy can also make great Aglianico." This is the flagship of their range (their entry-level bottling is Gricos), organically farmed on Mount Vulture's slopes and aged in a mix of large casks and barriques. It is the rare Aglianico that manages real power without heaviness, and it makes an unusually persuasive case for one of Italy's great and still-underappreciated grapes.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2022 Aglianico del Vulture Grifalco opens in the glass with a wild bouquet that blends crushed blackberries with spice, blood orange and cooling hints of mint. This is soft-textured and supple, with a core of mineral-inflected red and black fruits offset by a twang of sour citrus and sage. A bump of residual acidity maintains marvelous freshness as the 2022 tapers off long and structured. Sweet tannins reverberate as a note of licorice sticks around. This zesty and animated Aglianico is a total pleasure to taste, and it’s also a fantastic value." —Eric Guido

"A harmonious red, with fluid grace and fine integration, this layers sinewy tannins with flavors of black cherry coulis and mulberry, plus accents of dried lavender and rosemary, graphite and ash. Long and creamy on the lingering, spiced finish. Drink now through 2035."
