Grosjean Freres Vallee d'Aoste Pinot Noir 2024

$2999

Alpine Pinot Noir from Italy's smallest wine region. Grosjean Frères has farmed organically in the Aosta Valley since 1975 (certified 2011). The valley—tucked between France and Switzerland—produces only about 330,000 cases annually, with just 36,000 under DOC. High-altitude vineyards on steep, south-facing slopes produce a mountain-inflected style of Pinot Noir: bright fruit, floral aromatics, and mineral freshness that reflects the Alpine terroir. Ruby deepening to garnet, with cherry, flowers, sweet spice, and pepper.

More about Grosjean Freres

The Grosjean family has been farming the Valle d'Aosta since it was French territory, but it was only in the 1960s that Dauphin Grosjean (can you get more French with a name like that?) decided to turn the family's house wine, for family consumption, into a career. He began in earnest in 1969, and since 1975 only sustainable and organic farming practices have been used.

Dauphin's sons now run the estate, and are focused on producing gorgeous wines, made with integrity.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Rosenthal Wine Merchant

Although native to the Côte d’Or, Pinot Noir has been cultivated in the Val d’Aoste since both regions were under the Burgundian Dukes in the Middle Ages. While 70% of Grosjean’s vines are French clones, 30% are the rare Wadenzwil cultivar. Grosjean’s example blends varietal typicity with raciness and freshness. The vineyards are at a high altitude (600-750m) and steep incline, allowing for the distinct alpine characteristics to show through. Vinification in wood casks with daily punching down for three days, followed by 10-12 days of settling before aging partly in steel, part in oak.
