Gunderloch Rheinhessen Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Jean Baptiste 2023

$2399

Named after the founder of Gunderloch, this Jean Baptiste Riesling channels the essence of Rheinhessen's grand cru terroirs—Nierstein Hipping, Nierstein Pettenthal, and Nackenheim Rothenberg. The 2023 vintage crackles with flinty reduction, crushed nettle, and pure lemon zest, playing mineral saltiness against red apple ripeness and underlying citrus. At 22-24g/l residual sugar, this feinherb style drinks with wonderful racy energy that makes it feel much drier than it truly is.

"The 2023 Riesling Jean Baptiste Kabinett, named after the founder of the estate, is almost exclusively picked in the Pettenthal. It was harvested from lower parcels, with deeper soils and a slight easterly aspect, meaning earlier shade in the afternoon and at the very top. The 2023 crackles with flinty reduction, crushed nettle and a superbly pure overtone of lemon zest. The palate brings the full force of stone and savory iron oxide. It’s off-dry, playing off that mineral saltiness with red apple ripeness, always underlined by citrus. This is wonderfully captured, with real tension, energy and excitement. Lovely and totally lip-smacking, it balances 28 g/L of residual sweetness with just under 10 g/L of acidity - the latter makes this totally dangerous."

More about Gunderloch

The Rheinhessen is Germany's largest wine region and encompasses both majority it of it's bulk wine production AND it's very finest wines, like those of Keller "The German Montrachet".

Gunderloch is one of it's other top estates, and thanks to the forward thinking, hard working Johannes Hasselbach, is only getting better. He's pulled the wines into the modern era, making them first in the vineyards, which have been practicing organic for more than 5 years.

His goals are lofty, from reducing residual sugar and alcohol, quite a feat in the new age of climate change, adding complexity with spontaneous fermentation, moving away from purely reductive techniques by incorporating used barrels with longer maturation and playing with skin contact.

Of course it helps to have a host of desirable vineyard sites with which to work from including "Roter Hang", Rheinhessen's notorious red slope vineyard, along with a host of other grand cru's including Rothenberg, Niersteiner Pettenthal and Niersteiner Hipping.

In the hands of Johannes these sites are able to produce wines that have gained notoriety for their exceptional balance, grace, and filigreed nuance.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Bowler Wine

Always a pleasure and always great value for Riesling-lovers, the grapes for Jean-Baptiste are grown on the lower terraces of Gunderloch's three top vineyard sites: Nierstein Hipping, Nierstein Pettenthal and Nackenheim Rothenberg (all grand cru sites). Technically a feinherb style, or "balanced off-dry” at about 22-24g/l RS every year. This is a wine we've used again and again to introduce consumers to the joys of German Riesling.
