Heitz Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard 2018

$13999

Trailside is one of Heitz Cellar's three single-vineyard Cabernets, an 85-acre patchwork of clones and soils tucked between the Silverado Trail and Conn Creek on the eastern side of Rutherford. It's been part of the Heitz estate since 1984 and is now farmed organically. Heitz works it block by block, each lot aging separately through four years in oak before the final blend, in the patient, old-school Napa style the house is known for. The 2018 is a classically built Rutherford Cabernet with structure for the cellar. Decant it or give it time.

Robert Parker

93 points

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Trailside Vineyard comes from a site off the Silverado Trail, not far from Mumm. Gentle herbal notes of bay leaf or mint accent cherries on the nose, giving it an almost medicinal tinge, while the medium-bodied palate is silky but firm, bright, cool and refreshing on the finish."

Wine Spectator

94 points

"Sleek and focused, with notes of damson plum, red currant coulis and dark cherry preserves corseted tightly with singed tobacco, cast iron and loam accents. Cedar and sanguine notes add a twang amid the dark fruit, giving the finish a mouthwatering edge. A little patience required. Best from 2026 through 2040."

More about Heitz Cellar

Over three generations, Heitz Wine Cellars has helped define modern-day Napa Valley. Founded in 1961 by the late Joe Heitz and his wife Alice, the winery has built a reputation for producing world-class wines of distinction, including one of Napa’s benchmark Cabernet Sauvignons, the Martha’s Vineyard; a wine that James Laube from Wine Spectator has referred to as one of California’s “grands crus.”

During that 50 year span not much has changed at Heitz. Stylistically the wines have remained true to what made them world famous in the 1970s; powerful and concentrated but balanced with a vibrant nature and structure that allows them to age gracefully for decades. That structure and elegance is a Heitz trademark.
