More about

Go ahead and judge a book by its cover: one look at the label and you know this is a super-classic producer making Sancerre exactly how it’s supposed to be: there’s no grapefruit yeast to make it taste like New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, no crazy chemicals or wacky techniques to make the wine something it is not.

And why would they bother tricking up the wine? They are located in Verdigny, where the Sauvignon naturally provides an easy, upbeat fruit to mix in with the classic herb and mineral flavors.

Meticulous growers that they are, they end up with grapes chock full of all of those elements and wine that speaks them all.

One thing we need to speak to is the limited availability of wines like this. Sancerre used to be easy to buy and sell. This is because wine lovers tended to eschew Sancerre, after tasting all the industrial versions of it that flooded are supermarkets. In the last few years, we have all woken up to the incredible value and quality that you find among the true artisanal producers like Hippolyte-Reverdy.

So yes, the prices have gone up, and yes, the wine has become yet another tightly allocated offering.

The flip side is that they are totally worth it. We strongly believe that great Sancerre merits a place alongside great white Burgundies, thanks to their strong terroir signatures, mineral complexity and all around structure and intensity. Let's keep enjoying these wines before too many other people find out.
