Jacques-Frederic Mugnier Bonnes Mares 2023

$1,29999

Frederic Mugnier farms a narrow 0.36-hectare strip of Bonnes Mares, on the Chambolle-Musigny side of this Grand Cru straddling the Chambolle-Morey border. In his hands it's the most powerful and structured wine in a famously perfumed cellar, but power Mugnier-style still means grace: silky texture, lift and transparency over brawn. Production is tiny and the wine is rare. This is Pinot Noir built for the long haul, so cellar it.

"(50% of the vines in this .35 ha parcel were planted in 1980 and 1988, with the remainder planted in the ‘50s; the vines run from top to bottom and are planted in both terres rouges and terres blanches with a relative proportion of about 1/3 of the former and 2/3 of the latter). That curious form of reduction the Burgundians refer to as bourgeon de cassis (cassis blossom) dominates the nose though a floral hint is discernible. On the palate of the medium weight flavors there is plenty of punch if not the same density before tightening up on the moderately robust, powerful and sneaky long finale. This is built-to-age and a wine that will need 12 to 15 years of it to reach its apogee. " —Allen Meadows

"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru was the only cuvée that had not been racked. Blackcurrant pastilles commingle with raspberry fruit on the fairly straightforward and well-defined nose. The palate is medium-bodied with a chalky texture and crunchy red berry fruit tones. It's quite linear for a Bonnes-Mares and perhaps it would benefit from more rondeur and depth on the finish. Drink this over the next 12 to 15 years. " —Neal Martin

"The 2023 Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru is also quite open and giving in bottle, bursting with aromas of sweet berries and plums, framed by a touch of new oak. Medium- to full-bodied, it is fleshy and textural, with powdery tannins and a broad, sweet finish." —William Kelley
