In 1971 Hans-Josef “HaJo” Becker turned this Rheingau estate over to bone-dry Riesling and promptly lost nearly all his customers; half a century later the rest of Germany has come around to what he was doing. The estate was founded in the village of Walluf in 1893 by a cooper, Jean Baptiste Becker, and it still works the way it always has — wild-yeast fermentations, aging in traditional old Rheingau casks rather than steel or new oak, and bottles held back for years before release. This is the village-level Wallufer, drawn from Becker’s holdings on the eastern edge of the Rheingau and organically farmed. It is fresh, saline and dense rather than showy, which makes it the most useful bottle in the range: an aperitif, a fish wine, a weeknight Riesling with real structure. It drinks well now and will reward a couple of years in the cellar if you have the patience.

More about J.B. Becker

This has been one Germany’s most unrepentantly unique producers for half a century, though the estate itself was founded in 1893.

The big change began when Hans-Josef Becker took over the family estate 50 years ago and abruptly switched tack. Rather than continue to focus on the unctuous, sweet Rieslings the region was known for, Hans-Josef shifted production towards mercilessly dry, razor-sharp dry Rieslings that required years – sometimes decades – of cellaring to mellow out.

Such a radical move obviously comes with consequences. When his current importer asked what happened when he first made the switch in 1971, Becker replied “I lost all my customers.”

But Becker, who farms organically and ferments with indigenous yeast, kept going, and it seems like the world has finally caught up to his vision.

Dry German Rieslings are much more popular now, even in traditional bastions of sweet wine production like the Rheingau.

That said, Becker’s wines are still unique even in today’s more understanding world, and can even be a little shocking sometimes. This is especially true of the aged wines, which can be briny, spicy, and more than a little cerebral.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Oysters and the raw bar, fried smelts or schnitzel, roast chicken with herbs, or trout with brown butter. Also very good with cured ham and a crunchy salad before dinner.

Tasting Profile

Dry and medium-light, with citrus, green apple and a green-herb edge over a saline, stony core. Bright acidity carries a surprisingly dense midpalate. The finish is long and savory rather than fruity.
