Johanneshof Reinisch’s 2016 Ried Holzspur Saint Laurent is a single-vineyard red from Austria’s Thermenregion, grown on calcareous sandstone soils. The estate farms organically, hand-harvests, and ferments with native yeasts, aging the wine in neutral oak barrels to highlight purity and terroir.

This wine offers ripe red and black berry fruit, floral notes, and subtle spice, supported by balanced acidity and fine tannins. It’s a structured, elegant expression of Saint Laurent with aging potential.

A 4th generation wine estate currently run by 3 brothers who encapsulate a perfect snapshot of the region. Their vineyards are in both the Tattendorf and Gumpoldskirchen. They are most known for their red wines of Pinot Noir and St. Laurent, but also farm parcels of Rotgipfler and Zierfandler.

Their cellar is new, but built in a traditional style with old bricks and the equipment is state of art, alongside old neutral barrels. The wines are made traditionally, allowing the wines to show terroir rather than artifice in sweet and dry styles, as blends and single vineyards.

Professional Reviews

Robert Parker

"From 62-year-old vines and aged in Austrian and French barriques for 16 months, the 2016 St Laurent Ried Holzspur is intensely fruity and concentrated yet pure and fine on the charming and generous nose that exhibits dark, ripe cherry and berry aromas with notes of melting milk chocolate. Smooth and round on the palate, this is a full-bodied and juicy wine with power, finesse and intense and persistent fruit and warmth. Quite powerful and rich but always refined and elegant, with ripe and fine tannins. More the old Reinisch style of the red septet I had during this tasting at home in March 2020. 13.5% alcohol. Give the wine (at least) 3-5 years." -Stephan Reinhardt

"Cinnamon and plum notes immediately reach the nose before a more pervasive, dark peony note makes itself felt. The concentrated palate presents the finest web of sheer tannins, which provide an almost invisible but nonetheless firm structure against which the sonorous plum fruit can play. A very elegant, fine-boned wine that will reward with a little bottle aging. Lovely freshness pervades all." -Anne Krebiehl MW
