Joseph Phelps Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards 2023

$5999

In the late 1990s, when few dared plant Pinot Noir this close to the ocean, Joseph Phelps went to Freestone and helped launch the true Sonoma Coast movement. The estate vineyards sit on Goldridge soil — deep, well-drained ancient seabed — within a few miles of the Pacific, where persistent fog and wind stretch the growing season out and hold on to acidity. 2023 stretched it further than most: record winter rain pushed budbreak back by roughly a month and the summer stayed cool and even, so the fruit ripened slowly and came in fresh. As in recent vintages, a small proportion of whole clusters goes into the ferment and the wine sees about a third new French oak, emerging medium-bodied and supple with red cherry, pipe tobacco, mushroom and dark spice. A wine that opens doors to discovery, and one the cool vintage should carry for several years.

"The 2023 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards has layered aromas of pomegranate, rhubarb, hibiscus and clove, plus undertones of mushroom and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate offers generous layers of fruit and oak spice that lure you back to the glass for another sip. It’s structured by silky tannins and lip-smacking acidity and has a long, pure finish. 4,522 cases produced." —Erin Brooks

More about Joseph Phelps

Joseph Phelps was a Napa pioneer who changed how the world viewed Cabernet Sauvignon. When he introduced "Insignia" in the 1970s, Napa was still finding its footing, but Phelps demonstrated that Napa could rival—even challenge—the greatest Bordeaux châteaux (yes, including Chateau Latour) with wines of power, elegance, and depth.

Today, Joseph Phelps Vineyards continues to craft Napa Valley Cabernet which defines the essence of California. While Bordeaux emphasizes the more austere side of Cabernet (think herbaceous notes, acidity, and tannins), Napa Cabernet almost consciously wants to be a bit more fun. There is a generosity of fruit and flavor that makes the wines more drinkable young, and that just seems to have a wider appeal to those of us who don’t sit around smoking cigars in leather club chairs.

Napa, it must be said, has seen periods in its history where it took the “fun” side of its personality a little too far. Cabernet Sauvignon needs a little austerity to keep the wine balanced and to ensure longevity. Fortunately, Phelps has long recognized this and has managed to craft wines that appeal to both Bordeaux and California wine lovers alike. It’s the kind of balanced yet distinctly Californian style that Joseph Phelps helped pioneer half a century ago.
