Kante Venezia Giulia Vitovska Selezione 2016

Kante holds his Selezione bottlings back for years before letting them go, so this 2016 arrives already mature — the kind of aged white you normally have to cellar yourself. Vitovska is the Carso’s own grape, thick-skinned and native to the limestone plateau between Trieste and Slovenia, and Edi Kante is the producer who proved it could make something serious rather than merely local. The Selezione is his top tier: the best lots from a strong vintage, fermented in steel and raised in large neutral casks, then rested in bottle in the eighteen-meter cellar he cut into the bedrock until he judged it ready. What comes out is far more savory than fruity, with the stony, saline signature of the Carso pushed forward and the bottle age already folded in. It needs nothing but a proper glass and something on the table.

More about Kante

Where are the best white wines of Italy produced? There are lots of regions vying for the title, but today we will focus in on one producer, Edi Kante, whose wines make the compelling case that it is Friuli that is king.

Just looking at geography and soil, you might guess that Carso, a part of Friuli lying just outside of Trieste, is a superb place to make white wine. The soils are pure gray limestone. Cold air rushes down from the Alps, keeping the weather fresh and acidities high. The collision of cultures in this part of the world – first between Venetians and Austro-Hungarians and later between Italians and Slavs – has resulted in an incredibly open and innovative culture that resulted not just in espresso but also an incredible range of wine-making techniques and grape varieties.

No wonder that it was here that Gravner – often considered the greatest white wine producer in Italy – emerged on the scene, and no wonder it is that we also find here Edi Kante.

Kante took over his family winery in the late 1980s and ever since he has been experimenting. He has tried different grape varieties, played around with orange wine, and experimented with all manners of vessels for fermentation and elevage.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast turbot or monkfish, risotto with porcini, aged Montasio, or a Trieste-style plate of boiled pork with horseradish. Rich enough to take roast chicken with mushrooms.

Tasting Profile

Dry, medium-bodied and deeply savory: dried pear and quince, chamomile, almond skin and wet stone. Firm acidity with a broad, resolved texture from the years in bottle, and a long saline finish.
