La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion Pessac-Leognan 2019

$11699

Where the 2000 La Chapelle is fully mature, this 2019 is still in its youth — a chance to lay down a Pessac-Léognan second wine from a strong recent vintage. The blend is 50.1% Merlot, 45.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4.4% Cabernet Franc, harvested from September 11 through early October. The wine is deeply colored, with crushed black cherries, blueberries, and the lilacs-and-dark-chocolate aromatic signature of La Mission Haut-Brion. The palate is poised and sophisticated, framed by fine-grained tannins and plenty of freshness. Best from 2026 onward.

Antonio Galloni

91 points

"The 2019 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion has a crisp and fresh nose with blackberry, black olive and a light marine scent coming through with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and well-judged acidity. Quite harmonious with the oak neatly subsumed on the finish. Delightful. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting." —Neal Martin

Robert Parker

"Unwinding in the glass with aromas of dark berries, orange rind and rich spices, framed by a deft application of cedary new oak, the 2019 La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with lively acids and a more tightly wound profile than its counterpart across the street." —William Kelley

Decanter

"Bramble berries, fresh blackcurrants and black cherries alongside some savoury truffle too on the nose. Brilliantly textured tannins, they're the first thing you notice but so soft and charming - they coat the mouth gently allowing the bright fruit flavours to expand slowly from start to finish. This is fresh and juicy with a bright, if light, core of strawberry and cherry nuances. Good persistence with definition and a subtle florality that I love. A blend of 50.1% Merlot, 45.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4.4% Cabernet Franc."

Wine Spectator

92 points

"Ripe and sleek, featuring a lovely display of cassis and raspberry pâte de fruit inlaid with red licorice, red tea and alder notes. The long, refined finish has an alluring hint of wood smoke. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2034."

Wine Enthusiast

"Barrel Sample. Here is a beautiful wine, already showing impressive form as well as great potential. Concentrated tannins are partnered with vibrant black fruits in a combination that exudes balance and elegance. The wine is already rounded and open, but the tannins will certainly allow it to age well." —Roger voss
