One of only a couple of Arinto plantings Ian Brand knows of on the entire West Coast — a Portuguese white grape that thrives exactly where most whites wilt. The fruit comes from the Pierce family's small vineyard high in Lockwood Valley, west of King City, an inland, arid spot in the lee of the Santa Lucia Mountains that sits closer to Paso Robles than to Monterey Bay, with punishing midday sun. That's the point: Arinto shrugs off heat and water stress and still turns out high-acid, citrus-toned whites, which is why the Pierces, drawing on their Portuguese heritage, planted it instead of the usual French cultivars. The name is worth the trouble too — "cachudo" means "having horns," though depending on region it can also mean chubby, rich, long-faced, lazy or horny. Brand has spent his career arguing that the Central Coast is better suited to Iberian grapes than anyone credits; this is one of the more persuasive exhibits, and one you'll have a hard time finding a second example of.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled sardines or branzino with lemon, salt cod fritters, clams steamed with garlic and white wine, shrimp with piri-piri, roast chicken with herbs, or a plate of jamón and aged sheep's cheese.

Tasting Profile

Expect a high-acid, citrus-toned white — the grape's calling card, even from a hot site.
