The annual 12-year-old cask-strength Lagavulin is the distillery with the sherry stripped away: no rounded-off 16-year-old richness, just young Islay peat at full volume. The 2024 edition was released as Fireside Tales within Diageo's Special Releases collection, matured in a combination of first-fill ex-bourbon and refill casks and bottled at natural cask strength, 57.4%. The bourbon wood does the shaping here, layering thick toffee, vanilla and coconut underneath the smoke instead of dried fruit. Drink it neat first to see where it sits, then add a few drops of water; at this strength it opens up dramatically and the sweetness comes forward.
