A saignée rosé Champagne from a grower this small is unusual enough, and a vintage-dated one is rarer still. Laurent Bénard gets his colour by macerating black grapes on their skins. Today his Rouge de Noirs comes out as a non-vintage Brut Nature, so this 2012 Extra Brut is a look back at an earlier chapter of the cuvée. The house farms Premier Cru vines on chalk and clay-limestone in Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, Mutigny and Avenay-Val-d'Or, in the Vallée de la Marne. Michelle and Laurent Bénard-Pitois are the third generation of growers here. They ran their first organic trials in the mid-1990s, and fittingly, 2012 is the year their organic certification came through. If you think of pink Champagne as a party trick, this is the counterargument: serious, grower-made and black grapes from top to bottom.

More about

Laurent Bénard wanted to begin experimenting with biodynamic viticulture upon taking over his family domaine, Bénard-Pietois, in the mid 90s. Like so many of his peers, his parents were skeptical about what they deemed to be a risky and radical approach so Laurent decided to carve out just under 3 hectares for his eponymous label where he could work the way that he believed was best.

Today, Bénard has emerged as a leading grower in the new-wave Champagne scene. Based in the heart of the Vallée de la Marne, his vineyards are composed of limestone-rich clay deposits sitting on pure, chalky mother rock. They are farmed with extreme attention to details, including a horse-drawn plow and hand harvesting. Most importantly, the wines are super delicious.

Tasting Profile

Expect the deeper, more vinous side of rosé Champagne: saignée Pinot Noir typically brings red cherry, raspberry and redcurrant with a savoury, almost earthy edge. The Extra Brut style keeps it bone-dry and taut, with fine bubbles, firm acidity, a touch of grip from the skin contact and a chalky, lingering finish — more a food wine than an aperitif.
