Le Petit Cheval Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2010

$36999

Now drinking beautifully: the 2010 Petit Cheval is widely considered one of the greatest second wines ever made at Château Cheval Blanc, from one of Bordeaux's all-time vintages. Roughly three-quarters Merlot with the rest Cabernet Franc, made with about thirty percent of the estate's production. Fifteen years on, the wine is in a gorgeous place — deep garnet, with warm black cherry, boysenberry, plum, mocha, and cigar box, the tannins resolved into a firm-yet-silken frame, the finish long and perfumed. A rare chance to drink Cheval Blanc-trained Merlot at full maturity.

Antonio Galloni

89 points

"The 2010 Le Petit Cheval has a fragrant and well-defined bouquet with perfumed red cherries, boysenberry and mint aromas, focused, lively and full of vim and vigour. The oak is very well integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, slightly powdery in texture with a meaty, rather dry and ferrous finish. I wonder where this will go? Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal." —Neal Martin

Wine Spectator

93 points

"This is rather backward, with a thick coating of bittersweet ganache over a massive core of roasted fig, blackberry confiture and kirsch, backed by a long, charcoal- and tar-coated structure. The finish is broad, deep and very dark, with plenty of power in reserve. An impressive second wine. Best from 2015 through 2025."

Wine Enthusiast

94 points

"Great dusty tannins, almost too powerful, very solid in character. The wine is chunky, allowing juicy fruits to show. It is a dry wine, certainly not hard."
