Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon Macon Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette 2024

$4299

Dominique Lafon, famous for some of Burgundy's most coveted whites, brought his talents south to the Mâconnais and the region has never looked back. This bottling comes from the Clos de la Crochette in the village of Chardonnay itself, the place that may well have given the grape its name. Farmed biodynamically and aged in large wood, it's a precise, energetic white that delivers serious Burgundian character without the Côte d'Or price tag. A textbook example of why the Mâcon is having a moment.

"The 2024 Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette has a touch of menthol on the nose that gives the aromatics lift and charm. The palate has good weight, lightly spiced with touches of Clementine and grapefruit and a touch of lemongrass that enlivens the finish. Within touching distance of the 2023." —Neal Martin

"The Mâcon-Chardonnay Clos de la Crochette from Lafon is among the reliable entry points to its range. The 2024 features an elegantly lemony fruit with notes of butter and spice, and the oak integration is superb – nothing overt, simply a textural richness that balances nicely with the crisp acidity. Yields were down by two-thirds due to the weather, but what is left is lovely. The grapes are from 2.6ha of south-facing slopes in clay soils studded with abundant limestone pebbles; they were fermented mostly in large oak uprights and some large old oak."

More about Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon

Roulot’s Meursault, Leflaive’s Puligny: for generations wine lovers have obsessed over the nuances of the Cote d'Or different vineyards and villages. And for the last few years, the same has been true of Champagne. We think the Macon is next.

Why the Macon? Mostly because, as We've said before, it’s a region of exciting and diverse terroir. Although that wasn't clear back when production was dominated by large industrial concerns, now that some of the greatest white wine growers in the world are working there, everybody is catching on. It doesn't hurt that the wines are much more approach-ably priced.

No one has done more to put the spotlight on the Maconnais than the great Dominique Lafon. He established the domaine in 1999, and converted all of the vineyards to biodynamics over the next few years. Since 2006 his longtime apprentice Caroline Gon has been the head winemaker. She now has over a dozen vintages under her belt and the wines are better than ever.
