Lorenzo Accomasso Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva 2018

$32499

Lorenzo Accomasso is one of Barolo's last true legends, a fiercely traditional grower in La Morra working barely three hectares with a philosophy that hasn't changed in decades: very low yields, long fermentations, and years in big old casks. This is his flagship cru: Rocche dell'Annunziata, one of La Morra's greatest sites, prized for limestone-clay soils that give Nebbiolo extraordinary perfume and finesse. As a Riserva, it sees years of aging in old oak and bottle before release. These wines are almost unknown to the wider world but treasured by those who find them, and they vanish fast. This is the 2018.

"The 2018 Barolo Riserva Annunziata is super. Wild, complex and dynamic, the 2018 offers up beguiling notes of blood orange, pomegranate, plum, espresso, wild herbs and saddle leather. It boasts notable complexity and presence, especially for this year and site. At the end of his long career, Lorenzo Accommasso's wines now correspond to the recent hype that has surrounded them. I can only think back to the vintages of the mid-1990s, the first I tasted, wines that were punishingly austere to the maximum."

More about Lorenzo Accomasso

Accomasso has been making wine for longer than just about anyone anywhere, and he says that he hasn't changed a thing in his production since he started out in the 1950s.

Lorenzo Accomasso has 3 hectares in La Morra, including Rocche and Rochette. He is a peer and contemporary of Bartolo Mascarello and shares much of the same philosophy and approach to winemaking that Bartolo did. In fact he is mentor and friend to many of the top young producers in Barolo today.

The wines are powerful and backwards, but with a bit of patience and maybe a bit of squinting, you can make out the elegance and finesse of his home village La Morra.
