Lucian Aviet (Caveau de Bacchus) Arbois Vin Jaune 2015

$18999

Caveau de Bacchus, the Aviet family estate in Montigny-les-Arsures, is one of the Jura's great traditionalists, and Vin Jaune is the region's most singular wine. Made from Savagnin and aged for years under a veil of yeast without topping up the barrel, it develops a deliberately oxidative, savory character utterly unlike anything else. This is the real deal: a 2015 with the long aging Vin Jaune demands. Expect dried walnut, curry spice, green apple and a bracing, salty tang. It's intense, dry and built to last for decades.

"I tasted the bottled 2015 Arbois Vin Jaune, a wine from a warm year, the first year when the reds reached 14% alcohol. This Vin Jaune is a blend of lots aged in a cold and wet cellar, where the wine ages in a slower way and doesn't get as concentrated as it does in the warm and dry cellar. It's usually a blend of the two, irrespective of the style of the year. This 2015 feels very complete, with freshness and power. The wine is still very young and undeveloped, with shy notes of green walnuts, celery and curry—textbook descriptors of Vin Jaune. The palate is concentrated and powerful, with roundness and a velvety mouthfeel, with the iodine and peaty notes making a comeback in the finish. 6,000 bottles produced." —Luis Gutiérrez

More about

Lucien Aviet began making wine in the Jura in 1971, establishing himself as a master of the indigenous Trousseau grape. While his son, Vincent, has taken over the day-to-day in recent years, the library releases reveal perfect consistency of quality and style. But it's not just the Trousseau that excites here; everything done at chez Aviet confirms their place as one of the Jura's benchmark producers.
