Maison Blanche Montagne-Saint-Emilion 2019

$3899

Bad-ass Bordeaux. Maison Blanche makes true Bordeaux of terroir — biodynamic, clay-and-limestone, and aimed squarely at freshness and finesse over power and flash. It's a throwback to the days before flying winemakers homogenized the region. The estate had a twenty-year head start on sustainable agriculture and is now Demeter-certified, sitting comfortably alongside regional pioneers like Jaugueyron, Puy-Arnaud, and Pontet Canet. A higher-than-usual share of Cabernet Franc (somewhere between 20 and 50 percent, vintage depending) lends florality — violets — and structural tension to the Merlot. Only a fraction of barrels are new. The result is mineral, crunchy, red-fruited, and vividly alive.

More about Maison Blanche

Maison Blanche is one of our favorite biodynamic addresses in Bordeaux. These are wines that pursue freshness and finesse over power and flash – a throwback to the days before flying winemakers and the 100-point rating scale.

Yet Maison Blanche isn't merely looking backward. Indeed, the estate’s push for sustainable agriculture twenty years ago (and eventual conversion to biodynamic agriculture) places them with other regional pioneers like Jaugueyron, Puy-Arnaud and Pontet Canet.

The minerality and crunchy, red-fruited vivacity of these wines comes from the clay and limestone soils of Montagne Saint-Emilion. A higher-than-usual percentage of Cabernet Franc (About 50%, depending on the vintage) lends the wines their floral aromatics (think violets) and structural tension.
