Marcassin Pinot Noir Blue Slide Ridge Vineyard 2006

Marcassin sells about 90% of its wine through a mailing list that buyers can wait years to join, so a 2006 Pinot Noir with nearly two decades of age showing up on a shop shelf is worth a second look. This is Helen Turley's own house. She consulted for many acclaimed wineries before turning most of her attention to the label she owns with her husband, viticulturist John Wetlaufer. The name is French for "young wild boar," which is a fitting name for a winery this hard to track down. Only 505 cases of this 2006 were made. Blue Slide Ridge is one of the neighbouring Sonoma Coast vineyards that Marcassin bottles by name. It's a six-acre site in the Fort Ross-Seaview area, planted only to Pinot Noir. The Martinelli family planted it in 1995 on well-drained Josephine and Goldridge clay loams. If you've only ever read about these wines, this is the easy way in: no waitlist, and the years of cellaring are already done.

We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Roast duck breast with cherry jus; wild boar ragù over pappardelle (the name practically demands it); mushroom and thyme risotto; roast quail with chanterelles; seared venison loin.

Tasting Profile

Expect the ripe, concentrated style Helen Turley is known for: dark cherry, black raspberry and plum, with spice, earth and forest-floor notes typical of the cool Fort Ross-Seaview ridgetops. Typically full-bodied for Pinot Noir, with a plush texture, fine tannins and fresh coastal acidity, finishing long and dry. Think richer and darker than red Burgundy.
