Matias Riccitelli Chayaces Malbec Vina Extrema 2021

This comes off one of the highest, most extreme vineyards in Los Chacayes, at 1,500 meters in Mendoza's Uco Valley — the kind of site where Malbec ripens slowly enough to keep both its acidity and its shape. The soils are calcareous, and it shows: the wine is dense but strung along a mineral line rather than piled up as fruit, which is the whole argument for Argentina's high-altitude limestone. Matías Riccitelli fermented it in concrete and aged it sixteen months in cask, and there were only 3,000 bottles made. It drinks well now with a decant and is in no hurry — a wine built on acidity and structure at this altitude will hold and improve for a decade or so. If your idea of Malbec is soft and sweet-fruited, this will reset it.

"The 2021 Viña Extremas Malbec Los Chacayes derives from the region's highest vineyard, planted on sandy soils atop calcareous stones at 1,500 meters in elevation. As is typical, it was fermented with 30% whole clusters in concrete and aged 16 months in foudre. Opening with an inky yet fresh, distinctively herbal and transparent bouquet, the palate beautifully combines a soft, sumptuous, silky precision with a taut, focused and grounded core. It finishes with a spectacularly long, vivacious finish that is equal parts refined, wild and explosive while remaining effortless and controlled. Next to the equally impressive Viña Extremas San Pablo bottling, I found this to be the more understated and nuanced of the two." —Matthew Luczy

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled ribeye or short ribs with chimichurri, lamb with rosemary, or aged hard cheeses. Also very good with duck in a dark-fruit sauce.

Tasting Profile

Black and blue fruit with violets, wild herbs and a savory undertow of bitter chocolate and leather. Full-bodied and densely textured but lifted by vibrant acidity, with fine chalky tannins. Long mineral finish with tea leaf and lavender.
