Mickael Bourg Cornas 2022

$6799

Mickael Bourg is one of the most exciting young voices in Cornas. Son of a Cornas stonemason and a first-generation vigneron, he started out as a wine-industry mechanic before getting his hands in the dirt with Matthieu Barret at Domaine du Coulet, eventually leasing vines from Matthieu and bottling his first Cornas in 2006. Today he farms 1.5 hectares in Cornas โ€” including pieces of Chaillot, Les Mazards, and Saint Pierre โ€” about 60% planted in the 1950s. Sustainable, manual farming, whole-bunch native fermentation, three-week macerations. The 2022 is explosively floral and perfumed from the start: violets, lavender, ripe blackberry and blueberry, bacon fat, dried green herbs, and a touch of warm spice. Richer and silkier than typical Cornas โ€” closer in feel to a great Saint-Joseph โ€” but with real concentration and energy underneath.

"Using Syrah grapes from the Saint-Pierre lieu-dit at 380 meters in elevation, the 2022 Cornas checks in at a mere 12.8% alcohol. Pressed violet, black cherry, black plum, rose petal and a stemmy touch all come alive in the glass. Hitting the medium-bodied palate with significant flavor concentration, the 2022 is a ripe and refined Cornas with freshness and class. Give it one more year in bottle." โ€”Nicolas Greinacher

More about Mickael Bourg

Cornas is a region for the intrepid winemaker. Perched high above the Rhรดne river on steeply-pitched hillsides, vine growers struggle to interpret the hardiness and power of its granite-filled terroir to produce wines of great power, honesty, and magical restraint. Here, unlike the more established stylistic traditions of Cรดte-Rรดtie or Hermitage, the winemaker strives not to emulate but create something new that exists outside the terms โ€œclassicalโ€ and โ€œmodernโ€. Enter Mickaรซl Bourg: a young man, but one with an understanding of the land that goes well beyond his years or that of the region he makes wine from.

Back in 1955, Auguste Clape was the first to bottle a wine with the name Cornas. At the time, this little corner of the Ardeche was too daunting to farm by even the most adventurous winemaker's standards. Today, many winemakers have come to work these storied slopes. But with a desire to attract large followings, many have championed a more accessible, international style of syrah, bringing forward primary fruit flavors and supple texture while limiting the rustic tannic grip and non-fruit qualities that have been hallmark characteristics of wines from the region.

Mickaรซl Bourg eschews such an approach, instead embracing the more restrained possibilities for syrah from this terroir, in celebration of the style Clape championed back in 1955.

Bourg started as a mechanic, a strangely common beginning for Rhรดne winemakers. However, once he made the career change his future brightened quickly. After working for Guillaume Gilles and Matthieu Barret, he leased .5ha Syrah vines in 2006. In 2012 he purchased 1.5ha of Syrah vines that he could finally call his own.
