Le Pergole Torte is a wine that needs little introduction. It is famous for its iconoclastic history, taking a stand for Sangiovese back when the Chianti police demanded blending with other varieties and some producers started experimenting with international grapes. It is famous for its labels, with a newly commissioned piece of art gracing the bottle each year. It is famous for its rarity and its longevity. But the most important characteristic of Le Pergole Torte is how profoundly delicious it is.

The "magic" of Pergole Torte actually has some very grounded building blocks. Radda, where they are located, is one of the highest elevation growing zones in Chianti, which leads to cooler nights. And the orginal Pergole Torte vineyard faces northeast, further mitigating higher temperatures. Add to this that the original vines are now over 50 years old and therefor better able to withstand hydric stress and . . . presto, magic!

You probably already know about Montevertine. It has been one Tuscany's brightest stars for decades, on the forefront of every movement that has made the region what it is today. They stepped out of the consorzio because of their belief in Sangiovese, helping to create the Super-Tuscan movement. They have always sought to express their distinct Radda terroir, laying the foundation for today's growing interest in Chianti's varied crus (and especially in Radda!).

The prestige wine of Montevertine is only produced in outstanding vintages. This ultimate wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months and then racked into small French oak (Allier) barrels for the final six month stage of its élevage. It is produced primarily from a two hectare vineyard planted in 1968 exclusively to Sangiovese vines with a north-northeast exposure.
