Montevertine Le Pergole Torte 2022

Le Pergole Torte is the wine that started a revolution. When Montevertine walked away from the Chianti Classico appellation in 1981 rather than blend in the white grapes the rules then required, this 100% Sangiovese bottling from a single vineyard in Radda became one of the world's most celebrated wines of terroir — as a humble IGT, no less. Radda is Chianti's highest-elevation village, and it gives wines of bright red-berry fruit and aromatic lift; Le Pergole Torte is its purest expression. The 2022 came from a hot, dry growing season, and altitude plus Montevertine's refusal to over-extract kept it lifted and taut where lesser sites baked. It's a baby right now: decant it if you must open one, or better, put it away for a decade. A benchmark Tuscan wine, full stop.

"The 2022 Le Pergole Torte is every bit as magnificent as it was last year. Deep and expansive in the glass, with stunning depth, the 2022 stains the palate with layers of dark fruit, mocha, new leather and cedar. The 2022 starts to blossom with just a bit of time in the glass, leading to a finish that explodes on the back end. As has been the case for some time, the differences between Montevertine and Pergole Torte are increasingly mostly about style. The 2022 spent a year in Damy French oak barrels followed by a second year in cask. It will require a number of years to shed some baby fat to be at its most expressive." —Antonio Galloni

More about Montevertine

You probably already know about Montevertine. It has been one Tuscany's brightest stars for decades, on the forefront of every movement that has made the region what it is today. They stepped out of the consorzio because of their belief in Sangiovese, helping to create the Super-Tuscan movement. They have always sought to express their distinct Radda terroir, laying the foundation for today's growing interest in Chianti's varied crus (and especially in Radda!).

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Rosenthal Wine Merchant

The prestige wine of Montevertine is only produced in outstanding vintages. This ultimate wine is aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 18 months and then racked into small French oak (Allier) barrels for the final six month stage of its élevage. It is produced primarily from a two hectare vineyard planted in 1968 exclusively to Sangiovese vines with a north-northeast exposure.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Bistecca alla Fiorentina, wild boar ragu, osso buco, or aged pecorino.

Tasting Profile

Pure, high-toned Sangiovese. Radda's bright red cherry and wild berry fruit lifted by floral aromatics, with dried herbs, tobacco and earth. Medium to full-bodied, fine-grained tannins, vivid acidity, long and elegant.
