Gabaxo is a not-entirely-flattering local term for a Frenchman who has hopped the border — which Olivier Rivière, born near Cognac and trained at Domaine Leroy and Domaine de Chassorney, cheerfully put on his own label. He came to Spain in 2004 to help convert vineyards to biodynamics and stayed; what he saw in a region organized around how long a wine had been aged was something else entirely, which was terroir. This is his site-driven red: Tempranillo from rocky clay-limestone in the Rioja Alavesa blended with Garnacha off red clay near Cárdenas in the Rioja Alta, vines between 20 and 65 years old at 500 to 650 meters. Whole clusters, native yeast, fermentation in concrete, then roughly a year in 500-liter demi-muids and larger foudres — no new-oak varnish, no Reserva formula. Rioja that carries itself like a Côte de Nuits red, which is exactly what he was after.

Returns & Exchanges

We stand behind every bottle we sell.

  • If the wine is less than 10 years old and it is corked, you may return it to us for a full refund or exchange within 60 days of purchase. You must show us proof of purchase. We understand that you may not live near a shop and that it is difficult to ship open bottles of wine to us, so if there's any problem feel free to Contact Us and we'll work it out.
  • For wines older than 10 years, the consumer bears the risk of a faulty cork, but we accept returns of older bottles if the wine is faulty as a result of improper storage. Please come by the store or Contact Us if there is a problem.
  • We may, at our discretion and to the extent permitted by law, accept returns of unopened wines within 30 days of purchase if they were properly stored by the purchaser, subject to a 15% re-stocking fee.

Roast lamb or grilled lamb chops, jamón and Manchego, mushroom dishes, or chorizo with piquillo peppers.

Tasting Profile

Red cherry, plum and dried herbs with a peppery, floral lift from the whole clusters. Medium-bodied, with fine-grained tannin, bright acidity and a savory, stony finish. Fresher and more transparent than most Rioja.
