Timorasso is one of the great comeback stories in Italian white wine, and this bottle is a clean, unvarnished look at the grape from two people who bet their estate on it. In the early 1990s only three producers in the Colli Tortonesi, the hills around Tortona in southeast Piedmont, were still making Timorasso. Chiara Penati and Michele Conoscente, agronomists from Milan, arrived in the village of Paderna in 2010, revived old vineyards and then planted their own, mostly Timorasso. The 2024 comes from two north-facing parcels, Rampone and Simonelli, at 300 meters on silty calcareous soils. Whole clusters were pressed, fermented spontaneously in concrete, kept from malolactic and aged 10 months on the fine lees. Because it's concrete from start to finish, this is about as clear a read on the grape as you'll find. (Derthona on the label is the Timorasso-specific designation, taken from the old Roman name for Tortona.) It's an organic wine from a small estate, and an inviting way into what may be Italy's most exciting under-the-radar white.

Flatiron's Take

From the Importer

Bowler Wine

100% Timorasso from the north-facing vineyard parcels of Rampone and Simonelli (2 hectares total), planted between 1996 and 2016 at 300m on silty calcareous soils. The grapes are whole-cluster pressed. Fermentation was spontaneous in concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation did not occur. Aged in concrete for 10 months on the fine lees.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Agnolotti del plin with butter and sage; vitello tonnato; spring vegetable risotto; grilled branzino with lemon and olive oil; fritto misto; aged Piedmontese cheeses like Montebore or Toma.

Tasting Profile

Expect Timorasso's classic profile: lemon, ripe pear and white peach with a flinty, saline minerality. Concrete from start to finish and no malolactic keep it fresh and unoaked, while time on the lees adds texture to a medium body with bright, firm acidity. Think a dry Riesling's tension with a little more weight, finishing long, dry and savoury.
