The 2022 was a vintage that had to be outsmarted, and Opus One went into the September heat wave already picking — ripe fruit came off the vines pre-emptively, with irrigation dialed in vine by vine, so the harvest stretched from August 24 all the way to September 26 and the blend was built from fruit picked before, during and after the heat. The result is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon with 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and a whisper of Malbec (0.5%), drawn from four parcels in the western Oakville appellation — two of them inside the fabled To Kalon Vineyard. Nine separate Cabernet clones go into the wine, which is part of why it has the layered, shifting quality it does rather than one big note of Cabernet. It's also worth knowing what you're buying isn't a young wine: the house gives every vintage 18 months in new French oak and then holds it in bottle another 15 months, so this arrives three years after harvest, already settled. The partnership that started it all — Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, who met in Hawaii in 1970 and released the first vintage in 1979 — is the famous part, but the farming is the modern story: CCOF-certified since 2021, biodynamic in To Kalon South, and the first winery to hold both Napa Green Winery and Napa Green Vineyard certifications.

"The 2022 Opus One is a soft, relatively easygoing wine from an extremely challenging vintage in which the estate decided to pick straight through the heat. The 2022 offers terrific brightness throughout. Today, the tannins are a bit searing in their intensity, so it will be interesting to see how things ultimately shake out here. I find the 2022 is a bit edgy in its contours at this stage." —Antonio Galloni

"Picked before, during and after the year's early September heat, the 2022 Opus One—a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 6.5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 0.5% Malbec—admirably reflects the vintage, boasting a ripe, extroverted personality but also a slightly open-knit, coarser mouthfeel than either the 2021 or 2023. Rosemary and sandalwood notes accent cherries on the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is expansive and plush, finishing with ample length and soft tannins." —Joe Czerwinski

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Dry-aged ribeye or a roast rack of lamb, venison with juniper, truffled potato gratin, or aged Gouda and other hard cheeses.

Tasting Profile

Blueberry, cassis and dried rose petal with cigar box, olive and graphite. Full-bodied but poised, with bright red fruit, cocoa and orange peel on the palate, fine-grained tannins and a juicy ripeness that carries the structure. The finish is long and elegant, with wet stone, vanilla and a hint of coffee. Built to age; decant it if you're opening one now.
