This is California Pinot Noir from a farm where the farming comes first: Raj Parr feeds the vines with the farm's own compost plus ferments made from kelp, herbs, bark, sea water and raw milk. The farm sits outside Cambria, a remote Central Coast town of rocky cliffs, pine forests and cool weather. The Phelan family homesteaded there on Steiner Creek in 1851, a few miles from the Pacific. Greg Phelan planted own-rooted Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in 2007, choosing the four spots on the farm best suited to vines. Parr was introduced to Greg Phelan in 2017 and farms with permaculture, biodynamic principles and regenerative agriculture. In the cellar it's native yeasts and gravity to move the wine into older oak barrels. Parr names Thierry Allemand, Jean-Louis Chave and Stéphane Tissot as his main inspirations, and that farmer-winemaker approach shows at every step. This is a small, hands-on wine and a great way into one of the most interesting projects in California.

Tasting Profile

Expect a cool-coast California Pinot Noir in a lighter, more savoury style: red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry with hints of forest floor, herbs and a salty edge. Native yeasts and older oak typically keep the fruit up front, with a light-to-medium body, bright acidity and fine tannins. Think closer to red Burgundy than to plush, ripe California Pinot.
