Philipponnat Champagne Extra Brut Clos des Goisses 2013 (1.5L)

$64999

From the producer: Clos des Goisses is a very fine wine before being a very fine champagne. It is a perfect and unforgettable match for strong-flavoured dishes. It will go perfectly with fish or lobster and soft cheeses in a few years. Bottles will often benefit from being decanted into a carafe.

"first acquaintance. Deriving from only the six core parcels out of the 13 that make up the Clos des Goisses, it's a striking wine, evoking aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, Anjou pear, clear honey, bee pollen, stone fruit and iodine. Full-bodied, layered and vinous, its textural attack segues into a deep, concentrated and tightly wound mid-palate that's girdled by racy acids and chalky structure, before concluding with a long, saline finish. Why is it quite so good? It would appear that 2013 was the perfect storm: an early-ripening terroir in a cool, late vintage; moderately yielding Burgundian selections of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that attained full maturity; and a willingness to make a strict selection have all come together to deliver a profound Clos des Goisses." —Robert Parker

More about Philipponnat

We tend to divide our Champagnes into Growers versus Houses, but there is also an important in-between category that offers a lot of incredibly high-quality Champagne. We call it the Boutique House. It’s a space that’s occupied by Billecart Salmon and Jacquesson. They are technically Houses, but their work is rigorous and artisanal, and done on a much smaller scale than the Houses with the big brand names like Veuve Clicquot. They combine the excellent grape sourcing of a top House, with the refined wine-making of a Grower.

Philipponnat is a leading example of a Boutique House. Many wine lovers are familiar with them because of their Clos des Goisses, one of the most sought-after and treasured Champagnes of all – and which, as it dates back to 1935, was Champagne’s very first single vineyard Champagne!

Like Jacquesson, and several other producers, Philipponnat has enjoyed a quality revolution in the 21st century. In 1999 a new Philipponnat took over (this is still a family domaine), Charles Philipponnat, and he radically upped the winery’s game. He made little innovations here and there – using only the first press juice from his Chardonnay, and extended the aging of his wines in neutral barrels, for example. His wines became more intense and richer, but also fresher. And now the winery's current portfolio is one of the finest in Champagne.
