"A moderately golden color is indicative of the relatively mature nose that reflects plenty of toasty yeast, brioche and white orchard fruit compote aromas. The delicious, complex and caressing flavors are supported by a medium fine mousse that is neither soft nor aggressive on the lightly citrus-infused and agreeably dry but not austere finish. This is a lovely NV Brut that offers notably better depth than is typical for the genre. Moreover, while it will certainly hold at this level for some years to come, it's already drinking quite well now."

"(45% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier; 8 g/l dosage; disgorged in December, 2013): Light, bright gold. Expansive aromas of nectarine and ripe citrus fruits enlivened by chalky mineral, ginger and floral nuances. At once broad and nervy, offering enticing fresh citrus and orchard fruit flavors and deeper lees and honey qualities. This silky, nicely concentrated brut finishes with strong thrust and repeating floral character." —Vinous

"Disgorged in June 2020 with eight grams per liter dosage, the latest release of Philipponnat's NV Brut Royale Réserve is based on the 2016 vintage, with 27% reserve wines. Offering up aromas of peach, pear and plum mingled with apple blossom and sweet pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and expressive, with a pillowy mousse and a generous core of fruit, underpinned by bright acids." —Robert Parker

Wine Spectator

"Firm and smoky, this tightly knit Champagne is dense and focused, showing a subtle mix of patisserie apple, toast, plum compote and mandarin orange peel flavors. This should open with some short-term cellaring. Disgorged November 2015."

"A dry style, this classic nonvintage from Philipponnat is showing well, with greater depth than in the past. The wine has maturity, with toast, almonds and cookies, but retaining the acidity to give a wine that is mouthfilling and also refreshing."

More about Philipponnat

We tend to divide our Champagnes into Growers versus Houses, but there is also an important in-between category that offers a lot of incredibly high-quality Champagne. We call it the Boutique House. It’s a space that’s occupied by Billecart Salmon and Jacquesson. They are technically Houses, but their work is rigorous and artisanal, and done on a much smaller scale than the Houses with the big brand names like Veuve Clicquot. They combine the excellent grape sourcing of a top House, with the refined wine-making of a Grower.

Philipponnat is a leading example of a Boutique House. Many wine lovers are familiar with them because of their Clos des Goisses, one of the most sought-after and treasured Champagnes of all – and which, as it dates back to 1935, was Champagne’s very first single vineyard Champagne!

Like Jacquesson, and several other producers, Philipponnat has enjoyed a quality revolution in the 21st century. In 1999 a new Philipponnat took over (this is still a family domaine), Charles Philipponnat, and he radically upped the winery’s game. He made little innovations here and there – using only the first press juice from his Chardonnay, and extended the aging of his wines in neutral barrels, for example. His wines became more intense and richer, but also fresher. And now the winery's current portfolio is one of the finest in Champagne.
