Pisoni Santa Lucia Highlands Estate Pinot Noir 2023

$10999

Pisoni is one of the founding estates of the Santa Lucia Highlands — Gary Pisoni stuck Pinot Noir vines in this windy, sun-drenched bench above the Salinas Valley back in 1982, when the AVA didn't even exist yet. Today the family sells fruit to a who's who of California Pinot (Kosta Browne, Roar, and many more), but their own estate bottling is the benchmark expression. Mark Pisoni runs the vineyards; brother Jeff makes the wine, working in small lots with native yeasts. This is the family's home block — the source that started it all — and it shows the full Pisoni signature: dark, intense, spicy, and unmistakably Santa Lucia Highlands.

Antonio Galloni

"The 2023 Pinot Noir is a blend from the four different ridges on the vineyard, aged for 11 months in 65% new French oak. Blue fruit and chaparral herbs sizzle out of the glass, melding into a deep inner core of slate, crushed rocks and chalk. The refined, polished quality of the tannins and the harmony of the refreshing, cool-toned acidity are both particularly excellent in 2023. This is not a flashy vintage of the estate Pinot—it’s a powerhouse with a soft-speaking voice, a wine built for the cellar that’s already showing very well today. Resonant and harmonious, the 2023 is a dynamic, dimensional, utterly classy wine." —Billy Norris

"This always attention-grabbing bottling shows a slightly lighter shade this vintage, which sets up a very cellar-worthy experience. Juicy aromas of cherry sorbet topped with tarragon leaf make for a super inviting nose. The texturally firm palate picks up strawberry, mint and loam-caked mushroom, pairing fruit and earth expertly. Drink now-2043." —Matt Kettmann
