Malvasia de Colares is one of Europe's genuinely endangered grapes, native to a small stretch of Atlantic coast west of Lisbon and farmed today across only a handful of hectares. This is a straight varietal bottling of it, from a 0.6-hectare parcel planted in 2015 at Janas in the hills of Sintra, on a south-facing slope at 200 meters where calcareous clay covers Jurassic limestone. Forget the sweet, simple Malvasia you may know from elsewhere in the Mediterranean: grown in the Atlantic wind on cool limestone ground, the grape turns quiet, saline and savory. It is whole-cluster pressed, naturally fermented, allowed to go through malolactic, and held ten months on its gross lees in an older French barrel, where the point is texture rather than oak. A rare grape handled with real ambition, and an unusual white to put in front of guests.

More about Quinta de San Michel

Leave the trendy wine bars of Lisbon – the hippest capital in Europe – and head west, and you will come across the vineyards of Quinta de San Michel. But you might think you have taken a wrong turn and ended up at the beach. In the tiny, historic appellation of Colares, the vines do not grow on tidy rows on slopes of clay or limestone. They crawl across deep sand dunes, battered by the salty winds of the Atlantic Ocean.

It is one of the most extreme terroirs in the world, and it produces one of Portugal's most singular white wines: Malvasia de Colares.

This is not the sweet, simple Malvasia you might know from other parts of the Mediterranean. Grown here, in the sand and sea spray, the grape transforms into something fierce, mineral, and profoundly savory. These are wines that don't just pair with seafood; they taste like the ocean itself.

Tasting Notes & Food Pairings

Perfect Pairings

Grilled prawns, clams and cockles, salt cod fritters, seafood rice, or a plate of cured ham and olives.

Tasting Profile

Soft white fruit, dried flowers and gentle spice over a saline undertow. Dry and medium-bodied, rounder than most Portuguese whites thanks to malolactic and lees aging, with quiet rather than sharp acidity. Long, savory finish.
